Today’s scientists rely on both biochemical and cell-based in vitro assays for their research. Critical parameters for achieving success with these assays include understanding the assay dynamics, the instrumentation involved in read­ing the assay, and, in the case of cell-based assays, understanding how the environment in which the cells are grown impacts cellular physiology. Factors such as microplate geometry, density, surfaces, and instrumentation all play impor­tant roles in the success of the assay. In this seminar, we will discuss ways to enhance your assay performance. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Microplate selection and its role in the success of the assay
  • Important considerations for liquid handling
  • The importance of tips to your overall assay
  • Choosing the correct tip for your liquid handling needs
  • The importance of choosing the correct instrumentation and settings to run your assay

About Mark Rothenberg
Mark Rothenberg graduated from Emory University with his PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology. Over the past 25 years Mark has held positions in both academia and industry where he has developed an expertise in the areas of assay development, cell culture (multiple types including primary lines), and cell culture scale-up. Prior to his current position as Manager Scientific Training and Education he worked and led the applications team.

    Ali Alemozafar Dr. Ali R. Alemozafar is a senior associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he focuses on patent prosecution, strategic patent counseling, and IP due diligence in a wide range of technical fields, including diagnostics, therapeutics, genomics, and materials. Ali received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Stanford University, where he investigated the reactivity and atomic-scale changes accompanying reactions on various catalysts. He works with both venture-backed and public companies. His expertise includes patent strategy, patent prosecution, and patent diligence (both buy and sell side) for venture financings, public offerings, and mergers and acquisitions.
