MBC Alumni Company, Serotiny, Acquired by J&J

We’re pleased to spotlight Serotiny’s recent acquisition by Johnson & Johnson. Serotiny began operations with just a mailbox and a hot desk at the 953 Indiana MBC BioLabs site in 2020 as a JLABS company; in 2022 they began a research collaboration with J&J in order to screen multi-domain protein libraries to identify novel chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) signaling domains and moved to JLABS in South San Francisco.

With the acquisition, Serotiny will be able to further explore the potential of the company’s discovery platform. Congratulations to Colin, Justin, the entire Serotiny team, and Johnson & Johnson on the acquisition.

TwoStep Therapeutics

TwoStep Therapeutics is a venture-backed biotech startup leveraging proprietary tumor-targeting technology to create a pipeline of targeted cancer therapies that can deliver diverse payloads to virtually any solid tumor. TwoStep spun out from Stanford University from the labs of Jennifer Cochran, Carolyn Bertozzi, and Ron Levy, with support from the Stanford Innovative Medicines Accelerator. In March 2024, TwoStep closed its first round of funding— $6.5M seed led by NFX.

Pioneer Research Lab

Pioneer Research Labs is engineering microbes for Mars. They are a nonprofit research organization whose goal is to design custom polyextremophiles to make Mars habitable, both indoors for bio-production and outdoors for growth. The resulting organisms will one day act as the foundation of a planetary ecosystem, and their properties will allow us to produce the first cost estimate for terraforming.

ZeptoSense

ZeptoSense believes that early detection can lead to a better outcome. ZeptoSense is developing products for the early detection of DNA/RNA/protein targets and has developed sensitive methods and workflows for genotyping and sequencing on the existing CE (Capillary Electrophoresis) and NGS platforms that can be used in cfDNA cancer detection, early infectious diseases detection, or any other low-quantity sample detection in clinical, forensics, agriculture, or biodefense applications.
